A fast, easy and fun way to stock your freezer:
Hosting a Soup Night.
We all know that having nutritious meals ready to go (meaning, the only work it takes to prepare is heating it up) and that taking an afternoon to make foods for the week ahead (or to store for days when you just-can't-even) is a super-smart thing to do. Another idea is to combine cooking with an evening of hanging out with friends. Chores + Community = Way More Fun.
HOW-TO
1. Choose five soup recipes that start with a scratch-made broth and feature nutrient dense ingredients as add-ins.
2. Write the recipes down on note cards (5 copies of each recipe) or in an email (print out one copy of all the recipes for yourself).
3. Invite four people to participate. Have everyone choose one of the recipes.
4. Create your chosen soup. Begin by multiplying the recipe by 5. Take your time with your cooking, be intentional and thoughtful, think positive and loving thoughts as you cook (it sounds strange, but it makes a difference — trust).
5. Allow the soup to cool and then divide it into equal portions. Place each portion into a gallon ziploc bag (or another container, if you prefer).
Pro Tip: If using ziplocs, double-bag (just to be safe).
6. Place your soups in the freezer.
Another Pro Tip: If using ziplocs, lay them flat on a cookie sheet and place the cookie sheet in the freezer. (Can you tell I've had a spill in my past?)
7. Invite your fellow chefs to your home (or another meeting place) — ask them to come with a cooler and ice.
8. Trade your soups. Now everyone has five different, nutritious, healing meals to take home for their own freezers.
BONUS POINTS
Turn on some tunes, let the kids run amuck and curl up in the living room (or around the table), together. Share something good to drink and catch up. Food for the soul.
POSTPARTUM APPLICATION
Place your printed recipes somewhere they can easily be found — during your postpartum, one of your helpers can make a simple meal for you and your family.
