Job Description

Role and Responsibilities
The contracted, independent Birth Assistant performs a wide variety of tasks at and during a home birth, including but not limited to:
·       Attending 36wk prenatal visit, in the home of client
·       Taking maternal, fetal and newborn vital signs prenatally, in labor and in the immediate postpartum period
·       Setting up, maintaining and taking down inflatable birth tubs
·       Charting throughout labor, birth and immediate postpartum period
·       Setting up midwife’s equipment during labor and cleaning/sterilizing/putting away equipment after birth
·       Preparing simple meals for families, postpartum

​Qualifications and Education Requirements
A background in birth work, proficiency in measuring and assessing vital signs, current NRP and CPR certification required. Must have reliable transportation, cell phone or pager and be available to work an on-call, rotating schedule (includes evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays). Must have a non-judgmental attitude and warm, nurturing presence. Must be a lover and respecter of all women, their families and brand new babies.

Preferred Skills
Formal training as a birth assistant preferred.
